2.2  Components of a Flame Atomic Absorption/Emission Spectrometer System

2.2.7 Slits

After the radiant light has passed through the sample it is directed by mirrors to the entrance slit of the monochromator. A slit is nothing more than a hole or slot in a black surface that allows a narrow beam of light to pass through it. The purpose of an entrance slit is to only allow a fine beam of light to enter the monochromator. After the monochromator separates the white light into its components, and a narrow band of wavelengths is directed through the exit slit. This allows only a narrow band of wavelengths to exit the system and reach the detector.
