TEAM WEED 1997-2007:
Here are the PI, Research Specialist, and some of the many Whitman undergraduates who have worked in the Vernon Lab.

Thuy Dao - BBMB '07. A Team Weed member for > 2 years as an honors student and later a staff research assistant. Leaving in fall of 2007, Thuy will be missed by everyone: plants, pollen, and co-workers alike! Now in the Molecular Biophysics PhD program at Johns Hopkins University.

Nick Davis - Biology, class of 2008. NSF summer research assistant, 2007. Nick has developed an insatiable appetite for RT-PCR and Nomarski DIC microscopy since joining the lab.


Jillian Varonin - Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology (BBMB), class of '09. Awarded a Whitman NASA scholarship; member of Team Weed since her freshman year at Whitman.

Barbara Simeles- Biology, class of 2008. NSF summer research assistant, 2007. Shown here posing with Daisy-Mae, Barbara proves that she has finally conquered her fear of huge plastic cows.

Tovi Anderson - BBMB, class of 2004. An honors student and USDA-supported summer research assistant. Now in the Genetics Ph.D. program at Stanford University.

Dan Cushing- Biology, class of 2003. Honors student and the heart, soul, and gizzard of Team Weed for two years, including 2 summers as a USDA-supported research assistant. Co-authored a paper (2005) & presented a poster at the 2002 ASPB meetings in Denver. Later: Biologist, Alaska Fish & Wildlife Dept.


Brian Emmenegger - BBMB, '04. Since his work with PPR knock-out mutants, many have credited Brian with the invention of modern plants. Now in the Molecular Biology Ph.D. program at Duke Univ.


Maureen FitzMaurice - Biology, '05. A USDA summer research assistant. (She's wearing BillyBob teeth in this, our only photo). Later: Peace Corps, S. Africa, then to medical school


Kerry Cutler- Biology, '03. A summer research assistant supported by USDA funds. Coauthor on a Team Weed paper published in 2005. Kerry has since been a plant biologist in Hawaii, Colorado, and other cool places. She's shown here modeling the latest in lab glove and gogglewear.

Tori Yamamoto- Biochemistry, class of 2002. An NSF summer research assistant in 2001, working with the Team Weed Mobile Lab Unit in at the University of Arizona. Later, a Research Biologist at the University of Washington

Dan Gestaut- Biochemistry, class of 2002. A summer researcher with team weed in 2001; presented results at the ASPB meetings in Denver, 2002. Went on to the Biochemistry PhD program at University of Rochester,then to University of Washington


Mardi (Brinck) Port- Biochemistry, class of 1998. A Team Weed NSF summer research assistant; later a co-author (2005). Went onto a stint in the Peace Corps. Now: NSF Graduate Fellow, Molecular Pharmacology PhD Program,Univ. of Washington


Jennifer Eastberg- Biochemistry, class of 2001. A Team Weed NSF summer research assistant and honors student. Later: NIH graduate fellow, UW/Fred Hutchison Molecular Biology PhD program. (No photo available).

Marianne (Brady) Bryan- Biology, class of 2000. After working in an molecular/cellular immunology research lab, Marianne went on to the PhD program at the University of Pittsburgh.

Mike Hannon- Biology, class of 1997. Team Weed member as a student and then as a staff research assistant; co-author on a paper published in 2001. Later a research tech in the Plant Biology Dept. at UC-Berkeley. Then onto a PhD in Molecular Biology at UC-San Diego. (No photo available- but Mike approved our use of these )

Biochemistry, class of 1997. Worked in the lab back when we still did Southern blots! PhD in Plant Molecular Biology at Cornell University; post-doctoral researcher, University of Missouri. (No photo available)


Courtney Luke - Biology, class of 2000 (grad 1999). An NSF summer researcher in 1998 and '99. After graduation: off to Scotland, of all places (nothing like her native Hawaii.)

Annie Plantaric- Biology, class of 2000. Taught English in China after graduation.

MyPhuong Le
- Biology, class of 1998. Coauthor on a Team Weed paper (2001). Went on to work in the Human Genome Center at the University of Washington.

Stacy Mackie- Biology, class of 1998. Stacy went on to work as a Research Technician in a Cell Biology lab at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.


David Wilson- Biochemistry, class of 1999 (grad 12/98). Turned many Arabidopsis embryos blue; graduated with honors.

Brady Hamilton- Biochemistry, class of 1997. Honors graduate. Worked for Peace Corps and World Health Organization in Central America. (No photo available, but this '72 Gibson SG looks pretty good).

Sonja Keenan- Biology class of 1997. A member of the very first summer Team Weed! Went on to earn a Masters degree in Biology at NYU.
