Phil 2xx: Concepts of Nature in Modern European
Thought

Course Description: The
rise of modern science in Europe beginning in
the 16th century brought with it a revolution in humans’
understanding of our relationship with the natural world. This course will
focus on philosophical texts which develop important concepts of Nature in modern
Europe (roughly 1600-the present). Authors may
include Bacon, Rousseau, Hume, Kant, Wordsworth, Marx, Nietzsche, and
Heidegger. This course may be used
by Environmental Studies-Humanities students toward their critical thinking
requirements in the major. All
other Environmental Studies students may use this course to fulfill humanities
requirements for their combined majors.
Prerequisite: Classics 2xx, at
least one previous philosophy course, or consent.
