CURRENT COURSES TAUGHT AT WHITMAN COLLEGE

BIOL 111 - Biological Principles

Biological Principles is an introductory level course designed to teach you the basic principles of biology. It will introduce you to the research tools used in biological research and prepare you for focused coursework in genetics, cell biology and physiology. The course encourages experience-based learning of these principles, via laboratory experimentation and discussion, as well as promotes critical thinking and effective communication strategies in a biological context.

BIOL 305 & BIOL 306 - Cellular Physiology & Signaling

Normal cell physiology relies on accurate signal transduction pathways that allow the cell to alter its physiology in response to internal and external (environmental) cues. Cell signaling is essential to complex organismal processes, e.g., directed root growth requiring coordinated cell division, targeted movement by bacteria based on chemical signals (chemotaxis), or immunologic response following identification of a pathogen. This class is designed to teach you the basics of cell biology (cell structure and cell function), but will emphasize cellular membranes and the machinery involved in both inter- and intra-cellular communication.

BIOL 330 - Pathophysiology

The course will examine a sample of pathological states as a springboard for understanding: the basic principles of systems physiology; the cellular/tissue processes that give rise to abnormal function; and, the effectiveness of preventative/therapeutic approaches. This course will cover in detail the cardiovascular, endocrine, neuro-muscular, renal and immune systems and will offer an overview of integrative body functions such as electrolyte and nutritional regulation. Basic principles of physiology will be emphasized through laboratory work. Several lab sessions will incorporate guest lectures by clinicians/patients or tours of hospital clinics and simulated clinical data and patient case studies.
