BIOL277 - Ecology - Fall

An introduction to ecological inquiry and methodology with an emphasis on critical evaluation of scientific evidence. We will bring together insights from the following major sub-disciplines:

Ecosystem ecology - How does energy and matter move through ecosystems and how does this influence the organisms in these systems?

Community ecology - How different populations interact with each other and how do these interactions influence the distributions and coexistence of species?

Landscape ecology - How does spatial variation in biological variables influence ecological processes?

Macroecology - What can ecological patterns at broad spatial scales tell us about ecological processes?

Population ecology - How do individual populations interact with their environment, and how does the environment and characterisitcs of individuals influence population growth rates?

Evolutionary ecology - How do ecological interactions influence the evolution of adaptations?
