Name of area: Hells Canyon (Big Bar)

Where: In Hells canyon north of the town of Copperfield

How do I get there from Walla Walla?: Take route 11 through Milton-Freewater and continue south toward Pendleton. Several miles north of Pendleton take the left turn toward Mission and I-84 east. Go through the stop sign at Mission and continue on to the intersection with I-84 just past Wild Horse Casino. Head east toward Baker City on I-84. At Baker City exit east on Hwy. 86 toward Hells Canyon. Follow Hwy. 86 through Richland and Halfway and descend into Hells Canyon at Copperfield. Cross the Snake RIver into Idaho and head north (downstream) until you see a primitive campground (Big Bar) on your left and limestone crags on your right. The prominent buttress across the road and just above the camping area is Big Bar Buttress.

How long of a drive is it? 3.5-4 hours

What's there?: Over 300 bolted lines on incredibly good limestone

Land Ownership: Payette National Forest

Pros: Great rock, nice location, massive potential, uncrowded.

Cons: Poison ivy is abundant, short seasons (spring and fall), rattlesnakes, long drive. Hot in summer, cold in winter.

Comments: Good place to go for a 3-day weekend. See me for more detailed info.
