Dear Professor Walters:
I am enclosing information that hopefully will convince you that Freeport has absolutely no business connections in Sri Lanka.
I am sending you a letter from a former Freeport council (now a private lawyer) that explains the very complicated history of various Freeport companies. I asked Mr. Miller to prepare the letter because he was General Council during the period of these transactions. I think after reading his letter, you will understand why I was reluctant to categorically say we have no remaining connections to IMC Global. My concern was that a transaction this complicated may have left some small connection that I was unaware of to IMC. If you will read the last two paragraphs on page 2 and second to last paragraph on page 3, 1 think you will find an explanation that documents we no longer have connections with Sri Lanka.
If this is not enough, I include a February 27, 1998 independent news story that explains the total owner breakdown of the properties in Sri Lanka. I am also enclosing the July 28, 1997 news release that explains the merger; a Times-Picayune July 29, 1997 story that verifies Freeport-McMoRan Inc. has ceased to exist; and a final independent news release that states Freeport actually shifted its interest in the IMC project in the Spring of 1997, in other words, before the final merger was completed.
With all this information, I would hope that you would agree to remove Freeport's name from your website. In the future, if any organization sends you negative information concerning Freeport, I would like to have a chance to respond.
