On December 27, 1998, more than 5,000 residents of Eppawala and its environs, led by Buddhist monks, marched in defiance of the Government of Sri Lanka and Freeport-McMoRan/IMC-Agrico. Chanting angry chants, the people of Eppawala -- farmers and workers, young and old, male and female -- demonstrated their refusal to leave their homes for the mining project.
